About Melani van der Merwe

Melani was born in Upington, Northern Cape,  and joined her first ballet class at the age of 4.

She trained in the Royal Academy of Dance Classical Ballet Program and completed Grade 7 and Intermediate Foundation with Distinction. At the age of 12 Melani was introduced to Modern Dance for the first time and trained in the ISTD method.

In 1996 she left her home town  to further her dance studies in pursuit of becoming a Dance Teacher.  Melani's ballet teacher was her inspiration and so Melani followed in her footsteps by auditioning and being accepted to UCT School of Dance, Cape Town.

Melani Graduated in 1998 with a Dance Teachers Diploma in Ballet, Contemporary Dance and Creative Movement and also undertook her RAD Teachers Certificate and graduated as a Registered Teacher.

Subjects included Anatomy, History of Dance, Music, Notation of Dance, Jazz, African Dance and Spanish Dance in which she completed the Grade 5 Examination.

In 1999 Melani started training with Dee Schagen in the International Dance Teachers Association and completed all examinations up to Intermediate with Distinctions. During this time Melani School of Dance opened a studio in Melkbosstrand offering Classical Ballet Tuition, and started with 7 students.

The school quickly grew and in 2003 added other popular dance styles such as Modern Dance, Contemporary and Hip Hop and follows through to a complete professional curriculum with exams. Now, Melani is proud to have over 250  registered students and many that have qualified and gone on to fulfil their aspirations.

Students have the opportunity of taking part in Eisteddfod, International Examinations, Concerts and Workshops as inspiration to dance and gaining invaluable experience by appearing before live audiences.

Melani School of Dance has developed in many directions and is running a Specialised Pre-school Syllabus in Ballet and Modern.  A program for children with special needs like Down Syndrome and an inspirational program for boys including Hip Hop.

In 2001 Melani  joined the Northern Dance Academy to further her career in the teaching of Modern Dance under the AIDT Association and Completed her studies after 13 years with an Advanced Teacher Diploma with Honours and Distinction.

In 2006 Melani joined the Northern Dance Project Company and performed at the Grahamstown Festival with “the way of life”.

Dance is her passion, her job and her inspiration to live.

Here's what Melani has to say 'I believe that I am not only there to dance and teach but to touch souls of the future.'

'To live and to laugh require a reason.  But dancing is so close to one’s guts that it has no reason and yet it needs none;  it’s physical, and as a source of good cheer it is endless.'  TONI BENTLEY
