Ballet - RAD Examinations Board

RAD is an examining body and non-profit making associationin that offers Internationally recognised portfolio of examinations and assessments which is designed to motivate and encourage students of all ages and levels of ability, through a systematic measurement of progress and attainment.


Students can begin with the Pre-School Dance Curriculum, and follow on to Pre-Primary and Primary levels, these  continue into eight Graded levels or six Vocational Graded levels. Students may move from the Graded pathway to the Vocational Graded pathway at an appropriate time, or they may study both pathways simultaneously.


Melani School of Dance offers examination programmes to suit all, whether students are new to ballet or have dance experience, and male and female students can enter.

We offer:


The Pre-School Dance Curriculum develops basic movement skills, musical awareness, expression and creativity. Themed classes encourage class participation, focus and confidence that prepare students for entry to Pre-Primary levels. This curriculum is appropriate for students between the ages of two and a half and five years.

The graded examinations in Dance syllabus provides a broad practical dance education and develops technical, musical and performance skills. It incorporates ballet, free movement and character and with the new Pre-Primary in Dance and Primary in Dance is appropriate for students from the age of five years.

Vocational Graded Examinations in Dance syllabus provides an in-depth study of ballet, develops technique, music and performance skills and introduces pointe work for female candidates. It prepares students for a career in dance and is appropriate for students from the age of eleven years.

Solo Seal Award is the highest Vocational Graded examination and focuses on solo performance.

Presentation Classes  based on the Graded Examination syllabus, which are not assessed and Class Awards, available at Pre-Primary in Dance and Primary in Dance which are assessed.


Royal Academy of Dance (RAD)


The Academy considers professional training of young children in classical ballet to be virally important.  The Academy’s syllabi have been devised with great care to enable a child to progress through their dance training in planned stages, demanding no more of a young body than it can cope with.


Students may begin with the Graded Syllabus, and after Grade 5 ballet can either continue to Grade 8 Award or/and opt to follow the Vocational Graded Syllabus designed for Students wishing to study Classical Ballet seriously, possibly with a view to pursuing a career in dance or dance-related subjects.


The Academy’s Graded and Vocational Graded qualifications are accredited by the qualifications and curriculum Authority in England and its partner regulatory authorities in Wales and Northern Ireland.  Their examiners undergo a rigorous training and have stringent quality assurance procedures in place.


Ballet training at the studio can be started from the age of 6/7, Grade 1 at School.
