Modern dance emerged in the early 20th century when young dancers in Europe rebelled against the rigid constraints of Classical Ballet. Modern Dancers preferred to exhibit a freedem of expression by dancing more liberally and expressing their emotions, they were unable to do this in the Academic Institutions, so Modern dance evolved outside of this environment. Modern Dancers enjoyed the freedom of dancing without the constraints of shoes, tutus and ballet dance style.

A new era of dance had emerged, dancing bare foot and wearing fashionable costumes and dancing with freedom of expression was becoming a cult, movies like 'Fame' were  able to give Modern Dance a place to stand with various Genre's of dance. In todays studios, dancers are encouraged to express their feelings and interpret their emotions into their own unique flowing style and steps.

AIDT

The AIDT is an examining body and non-profit making association, whose aim is to promote the teaching and standard of Modern, Tap and Hip Hop dancing. A comprehensive syllabus in all sections enables students from the age of 5 years upwards, to learn the correct technique, develop discipline and musicality while enjoying the dancing experience.

Pre Grade children learn about a simple subject to which they can easily relate, regardless of language, using simple basic technique.

Older children learn through a carefully developed syllabus, moving through several grades, each employing more technique, and encouraging a basic knowledge of anatomy pertaining to the work, as well as musicality and presentation. There are 9 modern, 8 tap and 4 Hip Hop grade exams at present.
